In the State Duma oppose proposals residents of Yakutsk, where on Sunday committed rape of four girls to toughen penalties for pedophiles including the death penalty. On Wednesday, about a hundred people gathered at an unsanctioned rally in the center of Yakutsk, demanding tougher penalties against child molesters. Residents organized a petition to the leadership of the country for the introduction of the death penalty for such offenders. The mayor of Yakutsk Aisen Nikolaev joined them, and sent the document to Moscow. Parliamentarians with an offer of Yakutsk residents disagreed. «Of course, we can do it (lift the moratorium on the death penalty for pedophiles), and part of the people calm, but that we do not reduce the level of crime. We can not do because it\’s an irreversible process (can be punished innocent), «said the head of the news of the Duma Committee on criminal legislation, Pavel Krasheninnikov. He noted that the state — is not an instrument of vengeance. Lifting of the moratorium, according to him, has no effect on the presence or absence of crime. «All my life sitting in a stone cell with the victim, albeit imaginary — it\’s much worse,» — said the MP. In turn, the first deputy chairman of the Duma Committee on Family, Women and Children Olga Batalina, said she understands the residents of Yakutsk, however, does not believe that in Russia today is suitable lifting of the moratorium on the death penalty. «Our willingness to apply to anyone was the death penalty — rather, it is an alarming indicator of the state of society than the punishment for the offender, who may well get a life sentence,» — she said in an interview with RIA Novosti. The MP stressed that the position of the State Duma against pedophiles is extremely tough. Batalina recalled that earlier the State Duma adopted amendments to the Criminal Code, which seriously increases penalties for sexual offenses committed against children, in particular, provide for life imprisonment and impose chemical castration for pedophiles.
