A team of scientists from several research institutes of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences sent to Vietnam on a vessel «Akademik Oparin» to study the marine ecosystem, According Korabel.ru.
The aim of the expedition will be the study of the biological and biochemical diversity of the South China Sea, including the collection and identification of algae, macro-and micro-organisms to find new sources of physiologically active substances — for potential new drugs.
Two months of Russian scientists, together with colleagues from the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) will conduct a comparative study of marine invertebrates at the bottom of the shelf zone and coral reefs in order to preserve biodiversity and biological productivity of the coastal waters of Vietnam, the representative of the Pacific Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry.
