In March marked the 44th anniversary of the events on the island Damanski — one of the most heroic and tragic pages in the history of the frontier.
In the years 1967-1969 in violation of the border regime, a group of civilians and military personnel of the adjacent state systematically deliberately went into Soviet territory from border guards to turn out every time without the use of weapons. However, in the period from 2 to 15 March 1969 when the conflict reached its highest point in the island Damanski, avoid the use of weapons is not possible.
As a result of the armed conflict with the Soviet side killed 58 people. Border guards have shown in this confrontation endurance, stamina and self-control. Four border guards became Heroes of the Soviet Union: Yuri Babansky, Vitaly Bubenin, Democrat Leonov (posthumously), Ivan Strelnikov (posthumously).
